Silkworm Pathology

Mandate
  • Identification and diagnosis of silkworm diseases such as: Pebrine, Grasserie, Flacherie & Muscardine
  • Microscopic examination of silkworm samples, moths, and eggs.
  • Pebrine Detection and Monitoring
  • Examination of mother moths for Pebrine spores.
  • Conducting Pebrine monitoring programs in seed production centers.
  • Ensuring Disease Free Layings (DFLs) for farmers.
Pathogen Isolation and Identification
  • Isolation of bacteria, virus, fungi, and protozoa causing diseases in silkworms.
  • Laboratory culture and identification of pathogens.
Disease Surveillance
  • Field visits to sericulture farms and rearing houses.
  • Monitoring disease outbreaks and collecting samples for analysis.
Research and Development
  • Research on silkworm disease resistance.
  • Development of antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal formulations.
  • Study of host–pathogen interactions.
Testing of Disinfectants and Control Measures
  • Evaluation of bed disinfectants and rearing hygiene practices.
  • Testing effectiveness of new disease control products.
Farmer and Stakeholder Support
  • Providing technical guidance to farmers on disease prevention.
  • Conducting training programs and demonstrations.
Maintenance of Pathogen Cultures
  • Preservation and maintenance of reference pathogen cultures in laboratory.
Documentation and Reporting
  • Maintaining disease records, lab reports, and monitoring data.
  • Preparing technical reports, publications, and advisories.
Collaboration and Extension Activities
  • Coordination with CSB research stations, seed production centers, and state sericulture departments.
  • Participating in extension programs and awareness campaigns.
